Sewell's Shops c.1882
Although retail in Beverley was relatively basic in the mid 1880s, Henry Hawkins (H.H.) Sewell’s general store stocked not only groceries but clothing, hardware, crockery and patent medicines.
Sewell shops are where Charles Edwards established his first Beverley store (east end) before relocating to his own store directly across the street in 1886 (No.13).
After attaining the licence for the Freemasons Hotel, with the advent of the railway and the consequent prosperity, he built extensions to the hotel, leased his store and in 1903 opened a drapery store at the east end for his wife Annie.
Between 1904 and 1907, the Union Bank occupied the building until they built their own (No. 20). From 1909, tenants included the Great Southern Meat Supply, a fruit & vegetable store and for tearooms, and in 1929, Shackles family butcher shop, and later also the Albany Fish Supply, and in more recent years Avon Trading Company.
